On the heels of the wildly successful Night Owl single, Neighbour and
Thinktank are blasting off again, this time to everyone’s favourite
tibanna gas mining colony, Bespin. The next installment in their
interstellar journey centres on Lando Calrissian, the hard-drinking,
space-weed puffin’ administrator of Cloud City. Home to carbon
freezing chambers, darkside double-crosses, weathervane cliffhangers,
and a nightclub scene to rival anything else in the quadrant, the
hovering city serves as a waypoint for bounty hunters and rebels
looking to rest their weary hyperdrives. Are there still any girls
reading? Didn’t think so. (correct me if i’m wrong, we can play some
Counterstrike, maybe you can join my clan..

While obviously being a little obsessed with Star Wars, the boys have
come correct with some serious subwoofer rattling business here.
Zapp-style analog bass rides an irresistible midtempo boom-bap and
lays the perfect foundation for Thinktank’s spitfire verses, and in
between ‘em, the chorus features duelling synth leads and hair-raising
squelch chords. Finish it off with a smooth-as-carbonite B-section
that leaves plenty of room for cuttin’ and scratchin’, and you’ve got
yet another smash hit from space-rap’s hottest new duo.

Remix numero uno comes from the marvelous Tad Wily, one of the
hottest up-and-coming boogie producers out of the UK. His signature
cool-edit style works a treat here, flipping the percussion groove and
synth stabs into a frenzy-inducing disco workout. The bouncing, plucky
analog bass drives the track, providing the perfect backdrop for the
vocals, which have been re-dubbed and refocused to fit his blasting
space-funk style. Unbelievable showing from a great new talent.

Up next is Germany’s Funkanomics, known for pumped up discofunk
remixes and a striking approach to bassline-oriented midtempo. In this
mix, they juxtapose modern bass modulations and monstrous drum
programming with classic funk touches. Wailing sax and flute,
clap-a-long beats, and Think Tank’s hilarious vocal lead to a
fantastically mellow breakdown and buildup, before delivering us back
into bass-face territory for a final romp through their wobbly world
of bass.

San Francisco is home to many amazing producers, not least of whom is
the esteemed Tal M Klein, proprietor of the inimitable Aniligital
Recordings. Known for his unorthodox arrangements and intriguing
instrumentation, Tal provides a perfect contrast to the rest of the
mixes by blending acid, disco, and ethnic elements in his dub mix.
Three distinct sections allow crafty DJs to choose their flavour, my
personal favourite being the ecstatic third portion that focuses on
soaring vocal harmonies and a stripped-down focus on the original’s
B-section bassline. 303-style synth arps lend an otherworldy quality
to the first half of the mix, and a flute driven breakdown reminiscent
of Karl Denson moves this opus along to its conclusion in ecstasy
land.

Last but definitely not least is Homebreakin’s own GSD, or
GlowStickDan. Dan Murray is known for his witty banter and constant
acrimony as the label’s in-house blogger and web guy, and locks down
multiple DJ residencies in Calgary, Canada, birthplace of the label,
western-style ginger beef, and the caesar (look it up). In his mix,
Dan explores 80s dance single b-side territory with vintage drum
machine flourishes, swirling dub-fx, and some iron-chef chopping
skills to rival Emmeril. Be on the lookout for the upcoming “Filtered
For Your Pleasure” EP on Punchout Recordings, a release curated by GSD
that explores modern filter-house sounds. He’s also all over this
Moombahton thing, whatever the fuck that is.

If you’ve ever seen Matt (Neighbour)  & Cal play together ( Can you say PUNCHOUT! Friday’s!!!! ), then you know how bonkers this shit is gonna get. Oh, and the big homie Think Tank is hosting, and oh ya, last time Neighbour & Think Tank played Shine ( for the “Night Owl” record release ), it was their busiest night of 2009, that’s all, no big.
